Catalogue Note

Joe Strummer will be forever immortalised within rock'n'roll history. He channelled attitude and purpose with great punk-rock anthems to become the voice of a generation. His words and music still influence a generation of young musicians who want to make music with something to say.

Sadly the world lost Joe Strummer in 2002 and to mark this 10th anniversary, Strummerville, The Joe Strummer New Music Foundation is selling Beautiful Strummerville Spin, The Future Is Unwritten Painting to help fund and continue their work.

Set up by the family and friends of Joe Strummer in 2003, the registered charity seeks to reflect Strummer's unique contribution to the music world by offering support, resources and performance opportunities to artists who would not usually have access to them.  The charity also supports many projects and iniatives around the world that help to bring about change through music.

Damien Hirst has been a Trustee since the charity's inception, having been a close friend of Strummer in later life and a fan of his music and ethos.  The pair met around one of Strummer's legendary campfires when Joe put a blanket over the festival weary Hirst.  "He was a hero to me when I was a kid and he believed that we can change the world and invent the future.  There are very few people who are your heroes, and are still your heroes after you meet them. The only person I met like that is Joe" says Damien.

Strummerville aims to maintain this legacy and the charity continues to endorse a DIY, punk ethic which can be stretched across a wide range of musical genres.  The foundation makes it easier for musicians to share their music with others, get access to recording studios while at the same time teaching bands to stand on their own two feet.

The charity continues to cement the views that Joe believed in and to make sure as many people as possible have the chance to be inspired by him after all everybody has a story to tell ...
