Catalogue Note
"McCarthy had been using toys which were connotative of Disney or other aspects of mass cultural conditioning in his performances from between 1972 and 1984, and these objects (which were stored in trunks and later exhibited in their own right, and photographed for the series Propo) bore witness, in their soiled and dilapidated condition, to McCarthy’s ceremonial manhandling and desecration of them" - David Hopkins (from Exh. Cat., Edinburgh, Fruitmarket Gallery, Childish Things, 2010)
