Condition
Colour:
The colours in the catalogue illustration are fairly accurate, although the overall tonality is deeper and richer in the original. The catalogue illustration fails to fully convey the painterly surface and the relief elements apparent in the original.
Condition:
This work is in very good condition. There is some superficial surface dirt in places, notably in the recessed areas. No restoration is apparent when examined under ultra-violet light.

Catalogue Note
The present work marks a new departure for Karel Appel. Leaving behind the spontaneous pictorial language of CoBra, the influential movement he co-founded in 1948, Appel here embraces a new form of portraiture, executed in the form of a bas-relief with his characteristic lively palette.
