Catalogue Note
Though these works clearly derive from two of the four compositions by Lancret from his series The Four Times of Day (see M. Tavener Holmes, Nicolas Lancret 1690 - 1743, exhibition catalogue, New York, 1991, pp. 90- 93, plates 20a. and 20d.), the differences in colouring and the fact that the current works are in reverse suggests that they are after engravings of the originals.
