The canvas has relined. The paint surface is uneven and dirty but secure, with an old, pronounced craquelure running throughout. There is some abrasion to the darker tones of the painting. Some discoloured retouchings are apparent to the legs and body of St. John as well as the red cloth, which are presumably in response to old damages. Further old restored damages are suggested by the uneven surface of the painting, particularly upper left. The painting is offered in a gilt and painted wood and plaster frame in good condition.
