During the early 17th Century, a feud between Odoardo Farnese, Duke of Parma, and the papacy erupted over the possession of the territories of Castro and Ronciglione. This painting depicts the eventual defeat of the Duchy, now headed by Ranuccio II Farnese, who refused to adhere to the terms of peace agreed to by his father Odoardo in 1644. In response to his rebuttal, Pope Innocent X ordered his troops to raze Castro to the ground and purportedly erected a column at the site of the old Palazzo Farnese reading ‘Here stood Castro’. The city was never rebuilt.
