with borders of kingwood crossbanding between ebony and boxwood stringing

Condition

Very decorative and in overall good condition. There is wear and tear to the surface, including ring marks and scratches as well as some areas of discoloration to the polish. There are also some losses to the ebony stinging.around the edge. There is a gap between the upper drawer and the frieze. The slivered metal handles are tranished. This is a very attractive chest of drawers that would benefit from some gentle workshop attention.

Catalogue Note

The present lot is similar to a coloured design for a chest of drawers which appears in the pattern book of Gillows of London and Lancaster (Westminster City Archives, no. 735/1). Another similar example banded in kingwood, tulipwood and purplewood appears in the Estimate Sketch Books , dated 24th October 1789 and is illustrated in Lindsay Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig.118, pl.11, pp.168 and 180.
