Catalogue Note

Comte Alfred-Emilien de Nieuwerkerke was an influential figure in the arts in France during the reign of Napoleon III. In 1849 he became dirécteur-général des Musées and from 1863 served as surintendant des Beaux-Arts; he also advised on acquisitions for the Royal collections. Nieuwerkerke, who was of Dutch descent, was also a distinguished sculptor, exhibiting at the Salon from 1842 to 1861. The present bronze is cast after his monumental equestrian bronze statue of William the Silent, erected in 1845 in front of the Royal Palace in the Hague. The original plaster for this model, which is perhaps Nieuwerkerke's seminal public monument, was exhibited at the Salon of 1843.
