Condition

The painting is in overall good condition. Under UV light, we can observe an horizontal tear below the left hand of the man to his coat, and a vertical one from the horse's jow to the hat of the man. There is also a small repaint below the eye of the horse, and a thin retouche between the belly and the rear leg of the horse. A few retouches scattered in the background and on the borders.

Catalogue Note

Très influencé par Eugène Delacroix, cet artiste lorrain s'inspire tout autant des oeuvres orientalistes peintes par ses contemporains, dans la continuité d'un orientalisme d'atelier initié par Gros au début du XIXème siècle. En mars 1879, il se rend en Algérie afin de préparer son tableau intitulé La mort du sergent Blandan à Béni-Méred, aujourd'hui conservé au musée des Beaux-arts de Nancy.
