Catalogue Note
Editions of works by Frescobaldi, one of the greatest keyboard composers of the first half of the 17th century, are extremely rare at auction: we have traced only a few such over the last sixty years (and not this edition). RISM lists only seven copies of this work.
In 1626 Frescobaldi published the contents of his 1615 publication Recercari et canzoni franzese fatte sopra diverse oblighi in partitura...libro primo together with Il primo libro di capricci of 1624 in a single volume, a not inappropriate combination, given that they share not only open-score notation but also a four-part contrapuntal texture; the present volume is the second edition of this combined opus (TNG A.5b). Alexander Silbiger writes of these works: "The capriccios are not among the most performed of Frescobaldi's works, but they provide the connoisseur with continual surprises and pleasures and demonstrate Frescobaldi's compositional ingenuity and imagination functioning at their highest levels" (TNG, ix, p.246).
