Catalogue Note

Rare:
editions of major composers from the first half of the sixteenth century are of the greatest rarity at auction. Of this first edition of Arcadelt, just one set survives in a library in Verona, otherwise only a handful of voice parts are scattered in libraries in Bologna, Siena and Boston. Jacques Arcadelt was arguably the most important of the first generation of composers of the Italian madrigal, and his fame rests principally with his four-voice madrigals. This edition contains first editions of seventeen madrigals by Arcadelt, together with pieces by Verdelot, Barré, "Pieresson", Naich and others.
