Catalogue Note

The "Grosse Fuge" is one of Beethoven's most remarkable creations: a unique combination of dramatic contrasts, variation and counterpoint. Its great length - over 700 bars - rendered it unsuitable for its original purpose (as the finale of the String Quartet in B flat Op.130), and the piece was published separately in score form and in parts.
