The catalogue picture is accurate. The piece is generally in a fine condition. Three major chips to the giltwood external border, as visible on the image. On the painted inner border, six cracks inbetween of wooden panels. Wear to the gilding, which has also darkened. The whole painted decoration would benefit from cleaning. As said in the catalogue, associated mirror, with age and stains. Large and very decorative frame transformed into a mirror by a famous French decorator from the first half of the 20th century.

En 1931, Etienne Bignou, propriétaire de la galerie Georges Petit, organisa avec le concours du décorateur Serge Roche une exposition retraçant l'histoire du cadre en Europe depuis la fin du Moyen-Age. A cette occasion, Serge Roche prêta quelques pièces de sa collection et publia son premier ouvrage intitulé Cadres français et étrangers, du XVe au XVIIIe siècle (également édité par E. Bignou). 
Privilégiant les formes baroques et les jeux de lumière, Roche créa d'exubérants décors pour ses contemporains : le cadre présenté ici, peut-être transformé en miroir par ses soins, fut très probablement l'une de ses sources d'inspiration pour les imposants miroirs qu'il dessina.
