Une importante édition de la plus grande rareté, par un des plus grands compositeurs pour clavier de la fin du XVIIe siècle.
Aucune trace de cette édition en vente publique n'a été retrouvé. Le RISM enregistre onze exemplaires dont trois sont complets.
Le Hexachordum Apollinis - couronnement de la carrière de Pachelbel comme compositeur de variations - est composé de six arias et variations, et comme nous l'indique la page de titre, devait être executé par un orgue ou un clavinçin. Dans les cinq premières oeuvres, chaque aria est suivit de six variations à l'exception du cinquième, qui n'en compte que cinq. Le célèbre 'Aria Sexta', achevant l'oeuvre, est suivit de huit variations, et porte comme sous-titre 'Aria Sebaldina'. Il s'agit d'une référence à St. Sebaldus à Nuremberg, où Pachebel fut organiste de 1695 jusqu'à sa mort. Tous ces éléments sugèrent à certains que le Hexachordum est une oeuvre ingénieusement mystèrieuse, dont les secrets attendent toujours d'être découverts.

The Hexachordum Apollinis - the crowning achievement of Pachelbel as a composer of variations - comprises a group of six arias with variations, intended to be performed, as the title-page indicates, on the organ or the harpsichord. In the first five works, each aria is followed by six variations, with the exception of the fifth, which has five. The famous 'Aria sexta', which ends the work, has eight variations, and bears the subtitle 'Aria Sebaldina', a reference to St. Sebaldus in Nuremberg, where Pachelbel was organist from 1695 until his death. This feature and others, have suggested to some that the Hexachordum might be a work of cabbalistic ingenuity, whose secrets lie waiting to be uncovered.
