Catalogue Note
The New Grove Dictionary of Opera, i, 185.)
This libretto is the principal source for Monteverdi's lost opera "Arianna"; all manuscript scores of the music have been lost. Only an excerpt, the famous "Lamento d'Arianna" was ever published, in 1623 (of which 3 copies are known); otherwise, the printed libretto is the only surviving source for this opera, which was regarded by Monteverdi's contemporaries as superior to his Orfeo, performed the previous year.
Rare: we have traced only one copy of this edition at auction during recent decades (in the sale of the Feltrinelli collection at Christie's London in 1998). There are ten copies listed in Italy on ICCU, three of which similarly lack the author's dedication on A2 and A3, and another is defective. There were two other editions of this libretto also published in 1608 (their priority does not seem to have been clearly established): one in Mantua, possibly earlier (ICCU lists two copies, and one is in the Library of Congress) and the other in Venice. None of these editions are listed in the Catalogue collectif de France. Arianna was written for the celebrations following the marriage of the Duke of Mantua to Margherita, daughter of the Duke of Savoy on 28 May 1608. In a meeting on 26 February The Duchess of Mantua, had declared that Rinuccini's original version was very dry and demanded alterations (see John Wenham, in The New Grove Dictionary of Opera, i, 185.
