Catalogue Note
Rare: complete sets of madrigals, especially by leading composers, are of the greatest rarity at auction. We have no record of a comparable example at auction during the last fifteen years.
This is the only complete set of this edition recorded in RISM; otherwise only a single tenor part survives in Bologna and an alto and tenor part in Wolfenbüttel. The set was originally published in 1581, and RISM records seven editions in all, testifying to the importance of these madrigals.
The second set of madrigals contains the harmonically-adventurous O voi che sospirate, which uses enharmonic modulations for the phrase "muta una volta quel suo antico stil" (see TNG, vol.15, p.838). The final madrigal in the set, Se'l pensier che mi strugge is in eight parts, with the additional parts printed facing each other in these books.
