Catalogue Note

We have traced no record of these editions appearing at auction for over thirty years. These are the first editions of Le Roy & Ballard's collections of Lassus's five-part motets. Among the famous pieces included here are 'Tristis est anima mea' (a moving setting of Christ's words in the Garden of Gethsemene) in Primus Liber Modulorum, and 'Tribus miraculis' (vividly displaying Christ's transformation of water into wine) in Secundus Liber. These two motets had first appeared in Venice in 1565, but copies are exceedingly rare, even in national institutional libraries. For more on these works, see
