Description
finely painted in colour distemper on cloth within a silk border, depicting the Buddha Shakyamuni seated in vajraparyankasana on a raised lotus pedestal, with a gentle face, his hairs drawn up in a tight chignon covering the domed ushnisha, his right hand in abhayamudra and his left in vitarkamudra, dressed in a red pleated robe draping his shoulders and falling in loose folds over his crossed legs, with the undergarment antaravasaka gathered at his chest, a pink starburst mandorla radiating from his torso and a dark green halo encircling his head, the deity surrounded by a large assembly of disciples and followers engaged in various pursuits in a grassy landscape laden with trees and storeyed pavilions enshrouded with swirling clouds

A noble European family collection, acquired in Shanghai ca. 1900.
Condition
There is some light wear and water marks, mostly along the left edge (showing on the illustration in the catalogue), but overall the colours are well preserved and the condition is fairly good.
