Catalogue Note

Teadust glaze was introduced in the Yongzheng era to emulate archaic bronzes and was popularised during the Qianlong reign. The robust forms accentuate the reference to the past as well as allowing the subtleties of depth of colour to radiate from the vessel. A closely related vase was sold in these rooms, 2nd May 2000, lot 620; and another was sold at Christie's New York, 26th March 2003, lot 273. A vase of this type, but covered in a Guan-type glaze, was sold twice in these rooms, 10th April 2006, lot 1606, and again, 8th October 2009, lot 1626.
