Description
with slightly flaring sided supported on four ruyi-feet, the exterior carved in low relief and gilt with four archaistic panels of formalized ruyi below a band of key-fret interrupted by two taotie-mask flange handles suspending loose rings, brightly later decorated in gold with black outlines to cover the natural inclusions of the stone, the interior with two pheasants amidst a lush landscape of leafy lotus, chrysanthemum and magnolia, the underside with two partridges standing on cragged rocks flowered with peonies and chrysanthemum, the painting with silver and red undertones extending over the feet and sides, the translucent stone of pale green colour with a smooth polish
Provenance
Sotheby's New York, 1st June 1993, lot 13.
Condition
There are some minute nibbles. The gilt decoration on the interior and the base were later painted in Europe to possibly conceal the natural veining and inclusions in the stone. There is some retouching to the gilt decoration which has been slightly rubbed off. The actual colour is more tinged with grey than the photograph.
