A SMALL CINNABAR LACQUER 'PLAYING BOYS' BOX AND COVER 17TH / 18TH CENTURY
Estimate
60,000 - 80,000 HKD
bidding is closed
Description
of circular form with slightly bulging sides and a recessed base, the flat cover bodly carved in high relief against a fine interrupted grooves background with three boys at play in a rocky landscape, wearing long-sleeves shirts over loose trousers and dancing in an arabesque around a ball in the middle, the sides of the box and of the cover enhanced with key-fret, the interior and the base lacquered in black
Provenance
Christie's London, 16th November 1999, lot 89 (one of two items).
Condition
There are some minor chips to the details on the cover, as well as the key-fret sides. The sides and the black-lacquered areas have probably been covered by a thin layer of lacquer to conceal some typical age cracks. However, it is otherwise in overall good condition.
