Description

well potted, of octagonal form with four primary sides and subsidiary facetted sides, rising from a flaring foot to broad angular shoulders before tapering at the waisted neck of conforming section with an everted lipped rim, applied overall with a blue-tinged grey glaze suffused with a characteristic web of fine cracklure, the foot painted with deep brown slip, the base inscribed with the six-character reign mark in underglaze blue

Condition

There are some yellow stains in the crackles, more pronounced at one angle, otherwise the vase is in very good condition. The actual colour is quite close to the catalogue illustration.

A closely related vase, from the Hirota Matsushige collection and now in the Tokyo National Museum, Tokyo, is published in the Illustrated Catalogue of Tokyo National Museum. Chinese Ceramics II, Tokyo, 1990, pl. 721; another was sold twice in these rooms, 2nd May 2005, lot 693, and again, 5th October 2011, lot 1989; and a third vase was sold twice in these rooms, 24th November 1981, again, 23rd October 2005, and a third time in our New York rooms, 16th September 2009, lot 215.
