Catalogue Note

Scherman's early work is a masterful exploration of surface. In a review for Arts Magazine in 1980 Adison Parks writes "there is flatness in Tony Scherman's painting that jumps at the sound of colour, there is a hardness that kneels to the sensusousness of his surface". This play between surface and subject is heightened by the use of encaustic, using the wax to capture the light so that even flat surfaces of colour have an added layer of dimension.
