Catalogue Note

Boisseau trained and exhibited in the salons of Paris before travelling to the eastern seaboard of the United States. From there, he made his way to Montréal, where he developed a reputation as a major portrait and landscape artist, as well as a noted photographer. Boisseau exhibited genre and portrait paintings to great success at the Royal Canadian Academy.

This charming scene of an artist painting child models in a rural setting could reflect the artist's preference for working from life rather than in his studio.
