Description

  • Ludwig Gurlitt
  • Rider in a landscape
  • signed and dated L Gurlitt 1853 lower left
  • oil on canvas
  • 96 by 128cm., 37¾ by 54¼in.

Condition

The canvas has not been lined. There are some localised minor areas of fine lines of paint shrinkage, notably in the foliage above the stump in the lower left, in the rider, in parts of the foliage of the tree to the right, and in the crest of the hill in the upper centre, and some faint lines of craquelure, notably along very faint stretcher marks in the centre and along the upper edge. There are some thin strokes of retouching visible under ultraviolet light, primarily addressing paint shrinkage in the lower left, in the rider, a possible small area above the house, and along the extreme left and right edges addressing frame rubbing, which are quite minor for a painting of this size. Overall this work is in good condition, and its appearance could be enhanced with a surface clean. Held in a decorative gilt and dark-stained frame. The colours are overall deeper and less yellow than in the catalogue illustration.
