Description

  • Rosa Bonheur
  • Un berger avec son troupeau
  • signed and dated Rosa Bonheur / 1852 lower right
  • oil on canvas
  • 65.4 by 82cm., 25¾ by 32¼in.

Provenance

Acquired by the present owner circa 1984

Condition

The canvas has not been lined. Ultraviolet light reveals scattered small strokes of retouching, notably in the forehead of the shepherd and the tree-trunk behind him, in the black cow in the centre, and in the front leg of the brown cow in the foreground. Apart from lines of paint flaking and craquelure along the extreme lower edge (just visible in the catalogue illustration) which would benefit from stabilisation, overall this work is in good condition. Held in a decorative gilt frame. The catalogue illustration is overall accurate, however the pigments are slightly cooler in reality, and the green somewhat less vibrant.
