Description

  • Johannes Klinkenberg
  • Montelbaanstoren, Amsterdam
  • signed Klinkenberg lower right
  • oil on canvas
  • 80.5 by 121cm., 31¾ by 47½in.

Provenance

Acquired by the parents of the present owner by the 1950s

Exhibited

Berlin, Internationale Kunstausstellung, 1896, no. 2097

Condition

The canvas has not been lined. There are no signs of retouching visible under ultraviolet light, and some scattered spots which fluoresce turquoise, however these would appear to be the artist's original pigments and not retouching. Apart from some minor lines of paint separation visible under close inspection in the dark pigments in the boats, and some light surface dirt, overall this painting is in beautiful original condition. The pigments in the original are much richer and the green and blues deeper than in the catalogue illustration. Held in a decorative gilt frame, probably the original, with floral and foliate ornaments.
