Description

  • Théophile Duverger
  • Confirmation à Villiers-le-Bel
  • signed and dated DUVERGER 1867 lower left
  • oil on panel
  • 69 by 98cm., 27 by 38½in.

Condition

The panel is flat and even. Ultraviolet light reveals scattered minor spots of retouching, notably tiny spots in the face of the acolyte boy in the centre and in his red vestment, in the faces of the spectators behind him, a thin line addressing a surface scratch in the upper centre, in the architecture near the right edge, and along the extreme upper edge addressing frame rubbing. Apart from a minor circa 1.5cm scratch in the upper centre (just visible in the catalogue illustration), and a few spots of frame abrasion in the extreme upper edge, overall this work is in good condition. Held in a rococo-style frame. The pigments in the original are slightly warmer, and the varnish slightly yellower, than in the catalogue illustration.
