Condition
The canvas has not been lined. Ultraviolet light reveals a handful of scattered spots and a few strokes of minor retouching in the background of the composition, notably a 7cm horizontal stroke in the floor below the dog, and strokes addressing frame rubbing along the upper third of the extreme left edge and along the upper edge. With the exception of some tiny spots in the face of the gentleman in the background, there is no visible retouching to the figures. Apart from areas of fine lines of paint shrinkage primarily in the dark pigments of the background in the left half of the composition (just faintly visible in the catalogue illustration), overall this work is in good condition.
Held in a decorative gilt frame.
The catalogue illustration is overall accurate, however the varnish is very slightly yellower.
