Description
- Giovanni Battista Torriglia
- The Wool Winders
- signed G.B. Torriglia lower right
- oil on canvas
- 90.5 by 59.5cm., 35½ by 23½in.
Provenance
Acquired by the parents of the present owner in the 1950s
Condition
The canvas has not been lined. Under ultraviolet light a thick varnish makes the surface difficult to read with certainty; it is possible that there are one or two scattered minor spots of old retouching, notably in the neck of the seated girl. Apart from some frame rubbing at the extreme edges, a faint line of craquelure to the left of the window, and a minor vertical circa 4cm unrepaired tear in the left of the window (just visible in the catalogue illustration), overall this work is in good condition, and would benefit from a surface clean and restoration to the minor tear.
Held in its elaborate original gilt frame, with foliate ornaments.
The catalogue illustration is overall accurate, however the colours are slightly deeper due to the discoloured varnish and surface dirt.
