Sale: Stavros Mihalarias Art, Athens, 19 March 1990, lot 52 Private Collection, Greece
Maria Katsanaki, Le Peintre Théodore Ralli (1852-1909) et son oeuvre, Doctoral Thesis, Paris (Sorbonne), 2007, vol. II, no. 220; vol. III, fig. 81, illustrated; vol. IV, pp. 519-20, no. 289, catalogued & illustrated
The panel is flat and even. Ultraviolet light reveals minimal cosmetic retouching, notably a spot in the sitter's waist, tiny strokes in his ankle and around his feet, scattered along the extreme lower edge addressing frame rubbing, and clustered in the wall in the upper centre. This work is in good condition, clean and ready to hang.
Held in a decorative gilt frame with a name plate.
The painting is cleaner than in the catalogue illustration, and the tones richer and more contrasted.
