Condition

The canvas has not been lined. There is a horizontal stretcher mark in the centre of the composition (just visible in the catalogue illustration), and some localised hairline craquelure in the trunk of the tree in the upper centre. Ultraviolet light reveals scattered areas and strokes of retouching, notably to a circa 2 by 2cm area repaired tear in the thigh of the nude near the centre of the right edge, in the sky, in the right of the tree in the upper centre, in the rump of the brown horse left of centre, and in the breast of the nude in the lower right corner. The overall appearance of this work is good, and it could be further enhanced with a surface clean. Held in a simple carved wood gilt frame. The colours in the original are somewhat deeper than in the catalogue illustration, and some pigments, notably in the sky, are richer.
