Description

  • Carl Holsøe
  • Reflections
  • signed C Holsoe lower left
  • oil on canvas
  • 90.9 by 95.6cm., 35¾ by 37¾in.

Provenance

Niels Otto Christensen and Christine Caroline Christensen (née Engelsen); (commissioned from the artist)
Thence by descent to the present owner, grandson of the above

Condition

The canvas has not been lined. There are no signs of retouching visible under ultraviolet light. Apart from a tiny spot of paint flaking in the ceiling moulding in the upper centre, and two tiny scuffs, one in the wall in the lower left quadrant and one in the lower right (just visible in the catalogue illustration), this work is overall in very good original condition, and its appearance would be enhanced with a light surface clean. Held in a decorative gilt frame. Colours: the varnish is more yellowed and the tonal contrast subtler than in the catalogue illustration.

Catalogue Note

Holsøe painted the present work at Lille Hvidøre, Klampenbourg, where the sitter, Christine Caroline Christensen and her husband Niels Otto Christensen, had a summer residence. Niels Otto was a successful businessman, whose company specialised in the dairy trade with America.
