Condition

The canvases have been laid on board. Under ultraviolet light, the work with two lions appears to be untouched; the work with three lions appears to have a line of restoration below the mane of the foreground lion, and some strokes in the upper left behind between the bars. In the latter work there are a few tiny spots of paint flaking near the left edge just below the bars. The works are overall in good condition. Each held in a decorative gold-painted frame.

Catalogue Note

According to Dr. Grettmann-Werner the present two works are fragments of a larger circus composition, which Kuhnert executed between 1902 and 1910 while working on depictions of zoo and circus animals for Stollwercks Sammelalben and the Leipziger Illustrierte Zeitung.
