Literature

'Un grande pittore orientalista Alberto Pasini' in L'Illustrazione Italiana, 25 March 1945, anno LXXII, p. IX, no. 12, discussed & illustrated

Condition

The panel has been mounted onto a supporting backboard. There are two intermittent vertical cracks in the upper right and upper left quadrants in the sky, the one on the left also continuing in the roof of the building, a minor one to the right of the signature in the lower right corner, and a minor scuff to the left of the signature (visible in the catalogue illustration). There are some further cracks in the backboard which do not appear to relate to the panel on which the composition has been executed. Ultraviolet light reveals some scattered spots of retouching, notably around the rightmost and leftmost torches, in the upper story of the building on the right, near the left edge, and in the sky in the upper left, and a thick varnish primarily over the architecture, mounted figures, and the tree, which obscures a clear reading of the surface under ultraviolet light. The painting is overall in good condition. Held in a decorative gilt frame. The colours are less red overall than in the catalogue illustration.
