Condition

The canvas has not been lined. Ultraviolet light reveals minimal retouching for a painting of this size, notably to a spot of restoration above the trumpeter's head on the left (patched on the reverse), a vertical stroke in the shadowed grass in the lower right quadrant, and tiny scattered spots in the figures and horses in the left third. The work is in very good condition, clean and ready to hang.Presented in its original period gilt frame, with acorn and oak leaf ornaments. The colours are richer in reality than in the catalogue illustration, and there is more detail in the sky and the figures, which are brighter.

Catalogue Note

After their defeat of Leipzig in 1813, Napoleon and his army were forced to retire to the west of the Rhine. During the retreat, a Coalition army of Austrians and Bavarians commanded by the Bavarian Karl Philipp von Wrede engaged them at Hanau, near Frankfurt. The ensuing battle, fought on the 30 October 1813, marked an important tactical victory for Napoleon. The present work depicts the charge of the Bavarian cavalry against the French divisions, led by the French cavalry commander Comte Champion de Nansouty.
