STRUCTURE
Original canvas. There is a repair patch on the reverse of the canvas, in line with the left-hand dog's ear, which appears to relate to an old tear. Faint stretcher bar mark along upper edge. There is a small protrusion and some resulting paint loss near the upper right corner. There are also a few small spots of paint loss along the right side of the lower edge and to the seated grouse. There is some craquelure and the paint is a little thin on the darker of the dogs. There are isolated spots of staining and the work may benefit from a light clean.
ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT
UV light reveals an opaque varnish. There are a few areas of retouching to the left-hand dog, one of which corresponds to the above mentioned tear.
FRAME
Held in a gilt plaster frame.
