Catalogue Note
The present work was probably painted in the summer of 1940, when Munnings was a guest of Mr and Mrs Rank at Druids Lodge in Wiltshire - a large estate where James Rank trained and bred horses.
Rank bought Druids Lodge stables in 1934, employing Noel Cannon as his private trainer. Rank commissioned Munnings to paint some of his winners including Southern Hero, Black Speck and Knight's Armour. After undertaking this series of paintings for Rank, Munnings only accepted racing commissions from the King, except for being tempted out of 'retirement' once more by Rank in 1949.
