Condition
The following condition report has been prepared by Hamish Dewar Ltd, 13 & 14 Mason's Yard, Duke Street, St James', London, SW1Y 6BU:
UNCONDITIONAL AND WITHOUT PREJUDICE
Structural Condition
The canvas is unlined on the original keyed wooden stretcher and this is ensuring an even and secure structural support. There is some staining on the reverse and two very small repairs to the reverse of the canvas near the left vertical stretcher bar as viewed from the reverse.
Paint surface
The paint surface has an even varnish layer. Inspection under ultra-violet light shows a number of fine lines of inpainting infilling craquelure, particularly in the darker pigments where there has been some paint separation caused by the natural drying processes of the artist's materials. These lines of craquelure and paint separation are entirely stable and characteristic of the artist. There are two areas of retouching corresponding to the repairs on the reverse. These are in the lower right of the composition and measure approximately 2.5 x 2 and 3 x 2 cm in size. There are other very small scattered retouchings.
Summary
The painting is therefore in good and stable condition and no further work is required.
