Catalogue Note
The large painting for which this is either a sketch or a variant, is perhaps Walter Crane's most famous picture and one of the most admired Symbolist paintings by a British artist. It was painted in 1893 and exhibited at the New Gallery that year and is now in the collection of the Neue Pinakothek in Munich. The picture was suggested by the sight of Atlantic waves breaking on a beach at Wauwinet in Nantucket in 1892.
