Catalogue Note

‘It stands alone in the marshes, a mile from the nearest house, aloof, isolated, crumbling slowly away – the ruin of a stately abbey... To me there is a fascination about the ruin of St. Benet’s Abbey. Perhaps it has an added appeal for me because of its proximity to my house. It stands on the marsh hardly more than a mile away. I have walked there in all weathers, winter and summer.’ (Edward Seago, Tideline: The Ebb and Flow of Memory and Experience, 1948, pp.49-50)
