Catalogue Note
First book of the Sauer press and the first colonial book in Gothic type. Christopher Sauer emigrated from Germany to settle in Germantown, Pennsylvania, where he began his notable career as a printer and publisher with two works of ephemera. The present hymnal, edited by John Peter Miller, was compiled for use in the Ephrata Community where Sauer was an influence.
“As the edition was small and the book was in common use for devotional purposes, it has become extremely scarce, nearly all of the few known copies imperfect” (Hildeburn) .
