Catalogue Note
A splendid copy of Ortelius' atlas of ancient geography, with his list of Ptolemaic place names, both often found appended to his Theatrum. "For this work he did not ... copy other people's maps but drew the originals himself ... to be evaluated at the most outstanding engravings depicting the wide-spread interest in classical geography in the 16th century" (Koeman).
The work first appeared in 1579 with only three maps, the present edition adds 7 new maps and 1 view to its predecessor (1590).
