Three original typescripts of versions of the short story eventually published as "The End of Hate" being "Thumbs Up," "When This Cruel War" and "Dentist Appointment" All ca. 1936; 38, 20 and 25 pages respectively (11 1/8 x 8 1/2 in.; 283 x 216 mm). With Harold Ober Associates red rubber stamp on one story, a few pencilled editorial notes on revision and publication history in upper margins. Marginal corner tear to first page of last story.

Three early versions of the civil war story based on the author's father's civil war memories. Eventually published by Collier's as "The End of Hate" in the 22 June 1940 issue, each version show substantial differences in locale (moving from post war Minnesota to France for instance).  The final line of one version has echoes of the famed last line of The Great Gatsby, "...a distant time was receding with every stroke of the oars into a dimmer and dimmer past."
