34 volumes, comprising volumes 1–33 and index to volumes 1–20, 8vo (9 x 5 3/4 in.; 230 x 145 mm), 2,702 handcolored engraved plates (some folding); dampstaining primarily affecting vols. 1-16, prints offsetting to text throughout, text offsetting to a few plates in vols. 9, 10, and 14. Contemporary half calf; some volume rebacked with buckram with remnants of spines laid down, several boards detached, spines defective.

Catalogue Note

First edition. Sydenham Edwards was a botanical artist who worked for 27 years for Curtis's Botanical Magazine. In 1815 he started the rival Botanical Register. The text for the first 13 volumes is by John Bellenden-Ker and for the remainder by John Lindley.
