White as Assistant Surgeon, signed (“Abraham Lincoln”) countersigned (“Simon Cameron”), engraved document on vellum with manuscript accomplishment, 1 page (19 ½ x 15 ¾ in.; 495 x 400 mm), Washington, DC, 9 September 1861, engraved eagle at top and martial emblem at bottom, docketed in upper left; a few tiny edge tears, formerly folded.

A related archive of 8 additional diplomas and appointments for Charles and other members of the White family, signed by Presidents Andrew Johnson (stamped signature) and Ulysses S. Grant, as well as several medical faculties in a large black portfolio, along with a surgical kit, three 12mo appointment books extensively annotated in a white cardboard box, a magnifying glass on a brass lanyard, and an assortment of uniform accessories (epaulets, patches, brass buttons and a brass belt buckle) enclosed in a black-enameled tin box; for condition details see inventory.

Catalogue Note

Charles B. White served in the McClellan campaign and at Chantilly and Antietam. He later became U.S. Surgeon at Pittsburgh.
