Catalogue Note
Cushman (1578-1625) was agent for the Separatist Leiden contingent at the Plymouth Colony, arriving there in the fall of 1621. He spent approximately two weeks in the colony, in a successful effort to convince the colonists to adhere to their contract with the Virginia Company investors. His sermon addresses the problem of individualism in a colony founded on the principles of community and cooperation, basing himself on 1 Corinthians 10:24: “Let no man seek his own: But every man anothers wealth” a tack his audience evidently found convincing.
