Catalogue Note

One of three Wounded Warrior Project posters signed by Presidents Carter, Bush, Clinton, Bush, and Obama. Only rarely have five men who have served as President of the United States been alive at the same time, and even more rarely have they all consented to sign a single artifact. The first time in history that five Presidents had been together was at the dedication of the Reagan Presidential Library, 4 November 1991, the chief executives agreed to sign for each other's use a number of photographs showing them together: Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, and George H. W. Bush. Apart from those photographs, the three Wounded Warrior Project posters are evidently the only artifacts ever signed by five living presidents. Presidents Carter, G. H. W. Bush, Clinton, G. W. Bush, and Obama signed the posters at the behest of the television host (and manuscript collector) Bill O'Reilly as a way of honoring America's injured servicemen and women. The three posters were signed by the presidents in the order of their terms in office, Carter signing first and Obama last. The posters were sent to the offices of Carter, both Bushes, and Obama and hand delivered to Clinton's New York office. Members of the executive staffs of each of the presidents were instrumental in securing the signatures: Deanna Congileo, Press Secretary for Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter; Jim Appleby, Aide to George H. W. Bush; Doug Band, Counselor to Bill Clinton; Freddy Ford, Communications Director and Personal Aide to George W. Bush; and Valerie Jarrett, Senior Aide to Barack Obama, as well as Dagberto Vega, Obama's Director of Broadcast Media.

Like the other two signed posters, the present example is sold to support the mission of the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP), which is to honor and empower Wounded Warriors. WWP’s purpose is to raise awareness and to enlist the public’s aid for the needs of injured service members, to help injured servicemen and women aid and assist each other, and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs. WWP is a national, nonpartisan organization headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida. To get involved and learn more, visitwww.woundedwarriorproject.org.
