Catalogue Note

Working drafts of Boyle's first published story, originally appearing in North American Review in 1972 while the author was in his first semester at the Iowa Writer's Workshop. A rather impressionistic scene of a heroin addict raising alligators by hand, Boyle later stated that some of the material informed scenes in his 2003 novel Drop City (finalist for the National Book Award).  On one draft  Boyle has noted, "Sorry — don't have the finished manuscript —this is a rough copy but it approximates the work accepted."

One of the increasingly few authors lauded by critics and the bestseller lists, Boyle has written 14 novels, including the PEN/Faulkner winner World's End (1987) and 8 collections of short stories, (resulting in 5 O Henry awards).  Original Boyle material rarely appears on the market.
