Folio (21 1/2 x 14 3/8 in.; 317 x 365 mm).  50 hand-colored lithographed plates by M. Gauci mainly after drawings by Miss S. A. Drake, including wreath frontispiece; occasional foxing, generally not affecting plates.  Modern half brown morocco gilt, marbled covers.

Catalogue Note

As a young man, John Lindley was fortunate in obtaining as a patron the orchid specialist William Cattley, who paid him for drawing and describing plants.  Orchids remained among his special interests and he later produced the above monograph, which he dedicated to another patron, the Duke of Devonshire.
